


About the Role
The Director of Fleet Maintenance & Shop Operations will be responsible for the overall performance, safety, reliability, and profitability of the company’s truck and trailer maintenance operation.
Key Activities
Oversee all preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance for Class 8 tractors and trailers.
Establish and enforce PM schedules, inspection standards, and repair protocols.
Drive fleet uptime, asset reliability, and lifecycle cost optimisation.
Oversee diagnostics, major repairs, rebuilds, and warranty recovery.
Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and internal safety standards.
Manage the shop as a performance- and profit-driven operation.
Develop and manage maintenance budgets, cost controls, and operating KPIs.
Improve labour productivity, bay utilisation, and technician efficiency.
Oversee parts procurement, inventory control, and vendor negotiations.
Identify opportunities for cost savings and incremental revenue (internal billing, external service work, supplier programs).
Lead, coach, and develop a team of 30–35 employees, including technicians, parts, and administrative staff.
Establish clear performance expectations and accountability.
Recruit, train, and retain skilled diesel technicians and support personnel.
Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Develop long-term maintenance strategies and fleet replacement plans.
Implement best practices, process improvements, and technology (CMMS, telematics, analytics).
Use data to reduce downtime, control costs, and improve asset performance.
Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Safety, Finance, and Procurement.
Ensure audit readiness and regulatory compliance at all times.
Lead safety initiatives, inspections, and corrective actions.
Promote a proactive safety-first culture throughout the maintenance organisation.
Preferred Skills
ASE Master Technician certification or equivalent.
Experience running a maintenance operation with P&L or profit-centre responsibility.
CMMS and fleet analytics experience.
Background in high-volume or multi-shift maintenance environments.
Education and Experience
10+ years of fleet maintenance experience with Class 8 tractors and trailers.
5+ years in a leadership role managing maintenance teams.
Strong working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations.
Proven experience managing maintenance budgets and operational metrics.
