The Maintenance Technician III will be the highest individual contributor level within the bakery maintenance team, recognized as the facility's foremost technical expert across mechanical, electrical, electronic controls, and automation disciplines.
Key Activities
Serve as the highest-level technical resource for the most complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, and controls-related failures, diagnosing and resolving issues that exceed the scope of Technician I and II capabilities.
Program, configure, modify, and troubleshoot PLC systems, HMI interfaces, and distributed control systems (DCS); develop and maintain PLC program libraries, documentation, and version control practices.
Diagnose and repair electronic control systems including servo drives, variable frequency drives (VFDs), motion controllers, sensors, vision systems, and process instrumentation at the component level.
Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair robotic systems used in bakery production and packaging operations; coordinate with robot OEMs and integrators for advanced support, program updates, and system modifications.
Perform advanced electrical troubleshooting knowledge to interpret complex schematics, ladder logic, and network communication diagrams.
Design, fabricate, and modify mechanical components, fixtures, guards, and structural supports using welding, machining, and metal fabrication techniques.
Act as the lead Technician in the execution of capital improvement and equipment installation projects, including contractor coordination, commissioning, startup, and as-built documentation.
Develop and continuously refine preventive and predictive maintenance programs using reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) principles, CMMS data, and condition-monitoring techniques.
Conduct advanced root cause analysis (RCA) on chronic or high-impact equipment failures; implement sustainable corrective actions and track measurable outcomes.
Provide technical mentorship and hands-on training to Technician I and II staff, building team capability in controls, electronics, and advanced troubleshooting methods.
Collaborate with operations, engineering, quality, and food safety teams on equipment changes, automation upgrades, new product introductions, and facility modifications.
Evaluate emerging technologies, automation solutions, and maintenance tools to support continuous improvement in reliability, efficiency, and operating cost.
Maintain thorough documentation of PLC programs, electrical and controls as-builts, robot programs, fabrication drawings, project records, and equipment modification histories.
Preferred Skills
Experience with CMMS platforms for PM program management, equipment history tracking, and reliability reporting.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly and develop the skills of less experienced team members.
Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work at heights, and perform tasks in warm and physically demanding conditions.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree in industrial technology, electrical engineering technology, mechatronics, robotics, or a related field strongly preferred.
10+ years of progressive maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, with significant experience in food or bakery production preferred.Â
Advanced PLC programming and troubleshooting expertise required; proficiency with Allen-Bradley (Rockwell), Siemens, or equivalent platforms; experience with multiple platforms preferred.
Demonstrated experience with electronic controls diagnosis and repair, including servo systems, VFDs, motion control, and instrumentation at the component level.
