Whether you're starting your career in food manufacturing or looking to move up, one question we hear all the time is:

“What certifications do I need to work in a food plant?”

The answer depends on the role, but here are a few of the most common and valuable certifications across food and beverage manufacturing environments — especially for production, quality, and safety-focused jobs.

1. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)

What it is: GMPs are the basic rules every food facility must follow to ensure food is safe and clean during production.

Why it matters: Most facilities require GMP training for every employee on the floor.

Who needs it: Machine Operators, Line Leads, Sanitation Workers, QA/QC Techs.

2. HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)

What it is: A food safety system that identifies and controls potential hazards in the production process.

Why it matters: HACCP is often mandatory in facilities regulated by the USDA or FDA.

Who needs it: Quality Assurance staff, Supervisors, Food Safety Coordinators.

3. SQF (Safe Quality Food Certification)

What it is: A globally recognized food safety and quality program used by many large manufacturers and retailers.

Why it matters: While SQF certification is typically held by the company, having training or familiarity with the SQF system gives candidates a major edge.

Who needs it: QA/QC staff, Food Safety Managers, anyone working in audit-compliant facilities.

4. Forklift License / PIT Certification

What it is: Certification to safely operate a forklift or Powered Industrial Truck (PIT).

Why it matters: It’s required by law for anyone operating this equipment.

Who needs it: Warehouse Associates, Shipping/Receiving Clerks, Material Handlers.

Bonus: Allergen Control, WHMIS (Canada), OSHA Safety Training (U.S.)

Depending on your region and the type of facility, you may also need:

  • Allergen Control Training (especially in snack, bakery, or dairy plants)

  • WHMIS certification if you're in Canada and working around chemicals

  • OSHA safety training for basic worker safety in U.S. plants

Do You Need All of These to Get Hired?

Not necessarily. Many food plants provide on-the-job training for entry-level roles, especially for GMP and forklift operation. But having even one of these certifications can help you stand out — and may lead to faster promotions or higher pay.

At Top Quality Recruitment, we place qualified professionals in food and beverage plants across North America every day. Whether you're just getting started or looking for your next career move, we can help you land the right role.
